“The Price of the Promise of Network Marketing”. Mark Yarnell Story
Posted by: Tom Aliprandi | Comments (0)I am posting this Mark Yarnell blog post to simply express to everyone that NWM, (Network Marketing) is not a get rich quick scheme. It is hard work but the rewards are tremendous. With the new year totally in front of us, it is time to choose what we want and what we will settle for in our life. I can’t help but remember from “The Bucket List” movie quote, “if you think the first 40 years went by fast”. It never ceases to amaze me that people will work 40-50 hours a week for over 40 years and get jack %@&# at retirement. Their company could care less about them yet, they persist and perform with an almost knowing of what is to come…Senior Citizen Poverty. Talk about having too much month left after the money. Try having and extra 15 years of life left after the money.
Isn’t it amazing when you watch on the Biography Channel how successful people made their success? It took years and many rejections and battles against the norm for 100% of them to be considered successful. Yet today, people can’t work extremely hard for 2 years to possibly retire with a strong residual income for the rest of their lives. Go figure. I was fortunate that Mark Yarnell and Gary Archibald were my sponsors over 20 years ago. It is all in the numbers and commitment. Their training still stands the test of time.
I think of my great friend, Vinny Del Negro, coach of the LA Clippers. He came from a small prep school in CT that we both went to with about 350 students total. He had great potential and amazing skills, yet young. He pushed harder than anyone. He became an All-American and went on to attend NC State under the legendary, Coach Jim Valvano. While somewhat over his head initially, he worked harder and became one of the best players to ever come out of NC State’s program. He was drafted by the Sacremento Kings, perhaps too quickly, then went to Italy to hone his skills. He then got back into the NBA and signed a $12 million contract with the Spurs. After 14 seasons in the NBA he became a coach. Now, he has coached what most consider to be the worst teams in the NBA, yet he manages to get them to .500. He works and it does not come easy. He put in his years and I am sure life on the road is not always fun but he has passion for what he does. His teneacity is what we all have to find within ourselves. Vinny works through the system and succeeds. Success leaves clues; tenacity and commitment. Hope you enjoy the blog post.
Mark Yarnell, minister in a small town in Texas, was headed for bankruptcy and just about to lose his car and home. He looked for a way out and discovered network marketing. Luckily, he had a wise sponsor.
The sponsor gave Mark “THE PROMISE”. “This business can set you free financially in one to three years.” But he also gave him “THE PRICE” “To succeed, you will have to face and conquer 4 major enemies.”
Mark said, “It’s a deal.”
Mark began by inviting 200 friends over to his house to watch a video. 80 said “No, not interested”
– Mark had encountered ENEMY #1: Rejection.
He thought, “No problem. My sponsor warned me about that. I’ve got120 people still coming over.” Guess what?
– He had just encountered ENEMY #2: Deception.
Mark thought, “No problem. My sponsor warned me about that. I’ve got 70 people who watched the tape.” Guess what? 57 said “Not Interested”.
– He had just encountered ENEMY #3: Apathy.
Undaunted, Mark thought, “No problem. 13 people signed up.” Guess what? 12 of them dropped out of the business shortly thereafter.
- He had just encountered ENEMY #4: Attrition.
Attrition had left Mark with just one serious associate. But to this day, that single distributor earns Mark over $50,000 per month.
Mark Yarnell’s story is NOT Unique!
You may have heard of Bill Britt, one of the most successful distributors in Amway. Some years ago, 20/20 did a feature story on Amway. They spent 19 minutes interviewing whiners and complainers – several distributors who had failed and showed the garages full of products they couldn’t sell. During the last minute of the show, Mr. Britt was interviewed in front of his palatial home. He was asked, “Mr. Britt, this business has obviously worked for you. What’s your secret?”
He replied, “There is no secret. I simply showed the plan to 1200 people. 900 said, ‘No’ and only 300 signed up. Out of those 300, only 85 did anything at all. Out of those 85 only 35 were serious, and out of those 35, 11 made me a millionaire.” Like Mark Yarnell, Bill worked through the numbers.
Jason Boreyko, former co-founder of New Vision, told this story recently. When he was a distributor in Matol, he signed up 50 people. He heard a lot of “No’s” on the way to those 50. Jason took one man, who he knew would be terrific in the business to lunch, told him about the business and the man said “No.” Jason took the man to lunch again the next month and told him the updates. Once again the man said, “No.” Jason sent him some more information and took him to lunch again the next month. And again the man said, “No.” That went on for six months. The seventh month, something had changed for the man, and he said, “Yes.” That man made Jason over one million dollars. Jason also worked through his numbers.
According to Richard Poe in Wave Three while starting Amway, Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel, America’s eleventh richest people, recruited 500 people. 495 dropped out. The five that didn’t quit built Amway. All $7 billion of Amway’s business was built under those 5 people. Jay and Rich had to work through their numbers. There are many similar stories. Jeff, the top money earner in Mannatech, signed up 27 people his first month.
One might think that he is especially talented at sponsoring. Actually, Jeff will be the first to tell you that he is not talented at all.
In fact, he feels that he did very poorly. To recruit those 27, Jeff talked to 2000 people that first month. And of the 27, the only one who did anything significant with the business was Ray Gebauer, who has more than half of Mannatech in his downline.
Jeff’s word to you is that the numbers never lie. Pick your goal and then get into massive action. If you talk to enough people, you will make it!
Here’s the lesson: Your success is directly related to the degree to which you are willing to work to find others like yourself who are committed to succeed. Mark Yarnell’s odds were 1 out of 50. (Jeff’s were really 1 out of 2000.) Would you be willing to go through 200 people to find the 1 who will make you $50,000 a month? Or go through 200 people to become a millionaire? Or hear uncounted “No’s” to sign up 50 people to find a million dollar person? I hope you will. It’s easier when you know the odds up front.
But here’s the catch: You have your own set of odds and you won’t know what they are until AFTER YOU’VE SUCCEEDED. So if you’ve gone through 50 or 100 people and you haven’t found 1 serious person yet, you can either give up and assume the business doesn’t work or recognize that you are working through your own numbers.
Are you willing to find out what your own set of odds is?
That means that you must pay the price for freedom. Remember that the numbers never fail you. Despite where you are in your skill level, your success is assured if you talk to enough people. And as your skill improves, so will your odds.
There is no such thing as luck in this industry. Winning big is a matter of being willing to pay the price.

Use the HedgeHog Concept to Build Your MLM Career
About three years ago I was taking a Management Class at UMASS where the core study was Jim Collins’ Book, “Good to Great”. I loved the book and the course. The most moving, self motivating aspect of the book was the HedgeHog Concept. It is basic and simplistic in nature but very powerful. This could change your life and MLM career if you allow yourself to be honest and forthright with your own self assessment. This short video by Gideon Shalwick clearly shows how the HedgeHog Concept has streamlined his career and guides him toward greater success online and in life. If you use the HedgeHog Concept in your MLM business you will more than likely be more successful and find greater satisfaction and purpose.

This article by Mike Riley clearly hits the major points of why people fail in Network Marketing .Additionally, it should be known that before you start any program, make sure the company has a two year track record in MLM. As, my mentor and sponsor over 20 years ago Mark Yarnell always said, “the best time to join an MLM program is the day after it’s two year anniversary since over 95% of all MLM’s fail within their first two years”.
Building a business is not easy. It is generally known that over 90 percent of all businesses close their doors within the first five years. Network Marketing / Multilevel Marketing businesses are no different. However, MLM businesses have unique qualities and therefore unique reasons why more people are not as successful as they could be. Listed below (in no particular order) are the top 6 reasons people fail in MLM businesses.
Reason Number 1. Price of entry is low. Yes,this is one of the major reasons a lot of people are unsuccessful in Network Marketing. Because the required investment is so low, a lot of people do not take the business seriously. It also makes it easy to walk away. You can stop working on an MLM business where your total investment is $50 to $1000 a lot easier than you can walk away from a franchise business where you have invested several hundred thousand dollars to over a million dollars. The irony here is that network marketing truly has the capacity to be more profitable to the owner than most franchises.
Reason Number 2. Lack of consistent effort. Similar to the first reason, a lot of people begin Network Marketing and work at it only when it is convenient. The most successful people in Network Marketing have a plan and schedule and work that plan on a daily basis. time you have to invest..
Reason Number 3. No system or refusal to follow the system. If you do not have an up line with a proven system that works for everyone who works the system, building your business will be difficult. A significant percentage of people who get into MLM do not follow the system their upline has developed and try to create their own. Unless you have years of experience in THIS industry, then you should follow the success of others who do have that experience.
Reason Number 4. Failure to get taught. It is an unique feature of the network marketing business that a lot of people that start an MLM business do not believe they need trained in how to do the business. This in spite of the truth that most professionals either require years of training or college, and additional years of experience, to be successful.
Reason Number 5. Unrealistic expectations. Sometimes this is due to how people are recruited. Promises of easy money, an uncomplicated business, all you have to do is get three, etc., etc. do not do anyone justice. When the success does not come as quickly or easy as expected, the new distributor says this doesnt’t work and stops.
Reason Number 6. Failure to recognize normal business expenses. Some people get in MLM thinking their only investment is the initial product order or the distributor entry fee. You must plan (like any other business) for phone expenses, travel, training, internet, etc. Many people are surprised with the required normal business expenses if not forewarned.
To summarize, a significant number of individuals fail in network marketing, not because of the type of business MLM is, but by not treating it like a business or not doing the necessary research before getting involved. Not having or following a roadmap, not taking the time to get trained, or not taking consistent action are the fastest ways to fail in Network Marketing, or any business.

I think it is quite bewildering that so few of us Americans can put MLM into perspective. Approximately 90% of all MLM’s successes and revenues
come from foreign countries who seem to have a better grasp on the concept of time versus reward. I admit that I have been guilty of this as well. This short video by Eric Worre reminded me of this curse. To put into perspective, I will use Donald Trump as an example. He has the same 24 hours in a day that we do and look at what he accomplishes in an average day, month or year. All of us have the same 24 hours that he does and our lifestyles, unfortunately, are massively different. We work 40+ hours a week to make a certain annual income with modest incremental increases and we do this for 40+ YEARS! What if it was possible to work and invest in yourself by helping others succeed for a mere 25% of what you put into your work week now for 1 year (as opposed to 40+ years) and then receive the same annual income for life without working at your JOB ever again? I am game for sure!
